The symptoms of PTSD can usually be divided into four main categories:
Intrusive Thoughts: Individuals with PTSD may experience intrusive memories of the traumatic event, often in the form of distressing and vivid flashbacks. These intrusive thoughts can occur during waking hours or as nightmares during sleep.
Avoidance: People with PTSD may actively avoid situations, places, or people that remind them of the traumatic event. They may also try to avoid discussing or thinking about the event.
Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: PTSD can lead to negative changes in thoughts and emotions. Individuals may develop a negative outlook on themselves, others, or the world around them. They may also experience feelings of guilt, shame, anger, or detachment from others.
Hyperarousal: This category includes symptoms such as irritability, difficulty concentrating, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle response, and problems with sleep. Individuals may be constantly on edge, always prepared for danger, and have difficulty relaxing.
